Music / Decisions
Original music or a library track?
The right choice depends on the music’s role, the edit and the scope of the project. Both can work, but they solve different problems.
When an existing track does the job
A library track can make sense when the music mainly provides support, the budget is limited and the edit can accommodate an existing structure. Listen to the whole track rather than its most appealing excerpt. A long introduction or a section change can make a short version difficult to cut.
When the story needs its own structure
Custom composition lets you decide where the piece breathes, which idea returns and how it reaches the ending. It is useful when an edit, character arc or campaign needs a specific musical response. That does not require a large orchestra: a small, well-placed idea can carry a whole project.
Listen to what happens around the voice
A song that works on its own may compete with dialogue. Try it at the intended mix level and listen to words, pauses and key lines. Density, register and instrumentation matter as much as style. A composer can address these choices in the writing; an existing track depends on the material and alternate mixes available.
Consider the versions before choosing
A campaign may need several durations, endings and mixes. Check whether alternate versions or separate instrument groups are available and useful for the planned edits. When commissioning music, include those needs in the brief so the structure can account for them from the start.
Compare the complete scope
Ask which media, territories, term of use and versions each proposal covers. Availability does not mean every use is included. Compare the specific terms and have them confirmed in writing. An initial price alone cannot tell you whether two options cover the same requirements.
A useful question to ask
Does the music need to fit a story that is already defined, or can the story find its rhythm within an existing track? Testing both against the edit is often more useful than choosing by category. The commercial reel and music catalogue in the portfolio can help you identify the kind of response your project needs.
